It all started out with my step-dad getting a job as a concert promoter. Kevin would come back from all kinds of concerts with cool stories, autographs, and different things from the places he’d been. He always told me that when I got older I could work with him and sell merchandise, or work the door, checking tickets an stamping hands. I never really gave it any real thought till the time fnally came.
It was a warm, sunny Friday afternoon when Kevin picked me up from school to make our way to the Secter House Vineyards where the show was. When we got there a few hours before the show started, I had to meet the bands that were playing. That night it was Everclear and The Presidents of The United States. There were a few other bands playing that night but i wasn’t working for them. I was so incredibly nervous at this point in time. Igot handed a wad of cash for the change when i was selling the merch later that night. It was about 500$ in 5’s. 10’s, and 20’s. It was all in my back pocket and i felt like everyone know i had that kind of dough on me.
I, later that night, got the duty of having to run to the store to get food fotr the bands. I had to get everything exactly on the list, and bring it back and make it look nice. I don’t know how you make food look nicec when its chips and salsa or oranges and apples, but apparently i did because they didn’t complain. So i was in the clear. My uncle Rich is the one that books the bands and sets everything up. I met up with him becuase he had to tell me something important that apparently didn’t really matter in the first place.
There was still about an hour before the doors opened and i didn’t have set anything up yet so i was wandering around observing everyone. Kevin and Rich were nowhere to be found dealing with some important business. I was walking around checking ot everything when i looked over to my right and there was Ron Jeremy standing there ordering from one of the vendors at the show. I guess he was the main guest for that show. It was kind of cool to see him there because i’ve never really been in the presence of someone as famous as him. But it wasn’t really that special, just cool. I went to the entrance of the place and i stood there looking at all the people looking at me with my cool backstage workers pass. For some reason i felt like everyone looked at it first before they looked at me. I got to see the bands warm up and it was truly a fun experience. I wandered around the grounds untill I was needed to do something useful.
About 20 minutes until the doors opened I had to set up and organize all the merchandise. It seemed like it took forever. There were about 4 different styles of shirts and each one came in about 5 different sizes and they weren’t at all organized and I looked like a total idiot going through everything and looking confused. If I were someone else watching me I’d be laughing hysterically at me. I was looking at the clothes like they were aliens. It was great. When the gates finally opened to the Vineyards, so many people walked through and they all looked different. I’ve never seen so many people gathered in one place at one time.
So there I was, sitting at my booth scared out of my mind that I would count someone’s change wrong or give them the wrong size of shirt. People started walking up to my booth and asking for their choice in shirts and sizes and I started sifting through the sizes and giving people their change. It was like a wave, one second its there, the next it’s gone.
The bands started playing and the boots were still. I’d grab some cash ans split to the grub pub abd sit there while munching on my food and listening to the music. Well, when intermission came along it was a whole new wave, only this one was a tsunami. People came at me left and right, shoving money in my face and yelling what they want at me. I took a deep breath and moved left to right. I felt like I was moving at the speed of light. Finally, when I was down to about 10 people my uncle showed up to help. Right when I didn’t need him te most. Perfect timing I thought.
The show finally ended and I was ready to get away from all the people, so I got paid and waited for all the gear to get loaded into the vans and trailers and all the people to leave. It was about 3 in the morning when i finally saw my bed. It was the best sight of the night.
Ever since that show I’ve worked a handful more and I even got promoted to take tickets and stamp the people at the door. I guess I did something right after all.
